Even if it is a national holiday, there is no stopping a business from opening and thus requiring employees to work. There are many businesses that are not only open on various holidays but many retail stores that hold special sales on those days. Where I work, if I work on a holiday, I get to use the day off at another time, which would be the exact oposite of what you are trying to achieve.

If we had a real democracy all vote days would be a holiday, especially the primaries!

Imagine challenging them with this: how about we record all votes and then publish results about what votes that count said and what votes that don't count said? If you don't count the votes of all people, whether they can legally be counted or not, is to push the out castes into the shadows, where nobody will notice them.

It needs to be a voting week or weeks where you can take off any day over that time period that works best for you. Having everyone take the same day off to stand in line to vote doesn't seem to be a good idea IMO.

I can just hear someone saying: "oh, but they're represented by someone else's vote." Maybe that's exaggerating. But, it was a thing during women's suffrage that women didn't need to vote because their husband's vote would represent them, you know, because only right minded people should be involved in voting. These days, that sounds like the middle ages... but...

People think this is a hard concept but its really not. Majority of the US works Mon-Fri. Make the Holiday a Weekend and while I honestly believe a 24 period is plenty of time make it both Saturday and Sunday. Force companies to choose a day to be closed or they Must allow employees to be off one of those days. Make the polls stay open 24 hours each day, yes most will go during the day but many will go later or earlier to avoid lines. Problem with America is we think if we don't do it a certain way it will fail when that's far from the truth. While I hate comparing the US to others one example is Finland where there country is practically closed for an entire month every year.

Australia make their citizens pay a fine for not voting, USA needs to do that as well perhaps a holiday would be installed 😉

First off there is mail in and early voting.
Second not every person working recognizes fed holidays. Restaurants, police, amusement parks etc. They dont take off on fed holidays. Its an unnecessary nicety

Heard a rumor that in certain states a person could be fired from a job for their political affiliation and may even have to declare loyalty to a particular party. Don't know if that's true. But, can an employer make certain workers work extra hours so that they have to show up before the polls open and then stay until after the polls close?
