I am professor of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art and Painting, and i have to say, quite honestly, that this videos from Mark Carder are one of the best ( if not the best ), more intuitive and accurate ways of teaching oil painting.
Really a gem of a teacher, very comprehensible videos, extremely well organized methode of painting and one of the best ways of using color to paint, witch is using the primary ones more exhaustively darkening and brightened them with burnt umber and withe. Just like students learn a lot of times in Art School with the Zorn palette ( not exactely like the one used here, but the simplified principle is the same ), but normally is just a palette and then they are teached about others, with a lot more " fabricated" colors with other pigments in their composition that the students tend to be stuck with for years on.
Great channel, indeed !

Hi Mark, I want to "Thank You" for making the "Best Ever" oil paints in the world!!! Love the results I get with mixing the colors. Your paints are so beautiful, they are "Rich" unlike anything I've ever used. I must say they are all I am buying from now on!

The classical, traditional method is to simplify the many millions of tones into three basic tones. 1.) the color 2.) color in the light and 3.) color in the shadow. All the variants of these are mixed from those basic three. Any hyper-colorants (freckles, red patches, bleached spots, rosy lips - those are all done after the entire head/face/figure is rendered.

Probably the best, straightforward explanation I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much.

This and some other YT vids helped my painting skills jump from nothing to something very decent in a matter of 6 months. This video is what gave me my eyes for painting something...another youtuber gave me the process of building the painting. My personal experience with the tools gave me the skills to bring it all together lol.

That moment I realized that the skin wasn't white or black but the reflection color....it's a mental block that has to be removed in order to paint better. We must get out of our assumptions and paint what we actually see!

I took up oil painting as an impromptu hobby to fill up some deficits in my life. I can recall attempting to copy Bob Ross' style and failing miserably, further discouraging any attempts for a few years. Upon finding this channel and the website my understanding of the art has exploded in just a week, and I'm making considerable progress between paintings. I'm talking clear improvements from piece to piece, I've been blowing myself away stroke by stroke. This truly is the method for beginners if you want to learn how to do it the right way.

I realize this is an old video, but i'm just wondering how your oilpaint is always looking so smooth and thin, and yet still have so much pigmentation and almost no transparency?
Great videos, thank you.

I've been watching many oil painting vids, this one and others for about 1 month. Yesterday I took 5 hrs on corel painter to draw my first DIGITAL oil painting (1 layer, no special modifications or erasing)

I could not get the colors right for nothing, they were close but I know it was missing some pinks and greys. I gave myself a 5/10 and went to sleep. I woke up and looked at it again, it came out a bit better than I thought for my first painting (ok I know I never painted in my life but I also never digital painted in my life lol) I give it a 6/10.

I am happy to say that all of these skills/advice are transferable to digital painting. I am self taught btw. For my first digital painting, it looks alright but I want it to look more REAL!!! getting the color right. (I know its digital I could probably just use layers to do so but I want it to be as raw as possible. I am not painting to be professional, I am painting to see what solutions I make when I paint.)

corel has a color mixer although i still don't fully understand it lol.

Yes this is good, exactly how I would explain it. I would only add occasional shifts to crimson and warm yellow depending upon the light source
