Number 5. The Bathtub Girls
Two sisters in Mississauga, Ont., who were convicted of taking the life of their mother in a bathtub in 2003 have been sentenced as youths, and given the maximum penalty. Justice Bruce Duncan sentenced both to 10 years in prison. The two now 19 and 20 years old, would serve six years in secure custody and four years under conditional supervision, with 18 months subtracted for time spent in prison. The older sister will serve her sentence in an adult facility. The decision was announced at a court in Brampton, Ont. Their names can't be released because they were 15 and 16 at the time of the crime, and subject to terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
In convicting the sisters of first-degree, thejudge found the girls plied their mother with Tylenol-3 pills and alcohol on Jan. 18, 2003, before one girl held the mother's head underwater until she drowned. A psychiatric assessment released recommended the girls be sentenced as youths, citing concerns that the two would do poorly in an adult prison. Dr. Phil Klassen told a sentencing hearing that the sisters had no history of violence or criminal behaviour before taking the life of their mother. Initially, the passing of the 44-year-old mother was ruled accidental, but police reopened the case a year later when a friend of the sister contacted them with new information regarding them boasting in front of friends how they punished their mother.
Number 4. Brenda Spencer
Charles “Cam” Miller sees the scar on his chest every day and remembers how, when he was 9, a bullet from Brenda Spencer’s .22 rifle pierced him from back to front. He vividly recalls the sight of Principal Burton Wragg and head custodian Michael Suchar lying bleeding in front of Cleveland Elementary School in the San Carlos neighborhood. And Miller has never forgotten the horror he felt when he lay in an ambulance next to an inert Suchar and, as the ambulance rounded a curve, the custodian rolled on top of him, face to face. It was many years ago, on Jan. 29, 1979. Spencer, then 16, armed with the rifle and scope her father gave her for Christmas, started picking off students heading to the elementary school directly across the street from her Lake Atlin Avenue home. Miller was one of her victims. She fired 36 rounds. Eleven hit their mark — eight children and three adults. Wragg and Suchar passed away; the others, including San Diego police Officer Robert Robb, survived their wounds.
Number 3. The XBOX Underground
Hackers who infiltrated computer networks of games companies, including Microsoft, and stole commercially valuable information about Xbox One and Xbox One games, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. In a Delaware court, David Pokora, 22, of Mississauga, Ontario, and Sanadodeh Nesheiwat, 28, of Washington, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer fraud and copyright infringement. Calling themselves The Xbox Underground, the hackers broke into various game company networks including Zombie Studios, which was working with the U.S. Army on simulation software.
