Why In-N-Out reigns supreme in the $10 or under range per meal:
1. Consistency - You know it's gonna be exactly the same at ANY location.
2. Freshness - Never frozen and just try to find any In-N-Out that serves sad looking vegetables.
3. Value - Cheaper than McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and the list goes on.
4. Service - Friendlier than any other fast food joint.

Not a fan of their animal style fries though. Pro tip - ask them to grill the onions and put chopped chili peppers in your burger. GAME CHANGER

As a Texan who's had In-N-Out, the burgers are pretty good (if small) but the fries are cardboard. Basically if you get Whataburger fries with light salt and leave them sitting out for an hour or so, that's In-N-Out fries.

Having visited Texas on numerous occasions, I've eaten a number of times at Whataburger, the "official" state burger joint. If you've ever driven thru the state you know what I mean. It's burger is a different style and size from In-N-Out, and I gotta say it's pretty good. But what separates In-N-Out from Whataburger is consistency. No matter which one you visit, no matter which state it's in, you get the exact same quality from In-N-Out, and it's always topnotch. The quality of a Whataburger burger can vary depending on which store you visit. It can range from unbeatable to WTF.

3x3 is the way to go. In-n-Out marketing campaign back in the early 1990's spelled out their philosophy..."We got no freezers, we got no heat lamps, we got no artificial cheese" their food is all fresh never frozen, locally sourced always.

Don't get too hung up on the word "spread". It is not a California thing; it is an In N Out thing. The beef is delivered fresh daily and ground on site daily.

Fun Fact: I am a from California AND IN N OUT DONT GOT COMMERCIALS

A bunch of us Californians all got together and decided to call it "spread" just to piss off Texans.

I'm in cali and I'm 50 miles away so I haven't had In N Out in years. I'm drooling watching this vid.. They grind fresh beef, and fry fresh sliced potatos.

A regular double double does not come with pickles. An animal style burger comes with the patties, mustard, fried, extra spread, and pickles

I have a longstanding relationship with In-N-Out, having worked there from 1999 to 2001. What keeps drawing me back is their unyielding commitment to freshness and hygiene. We used to peel and dice potatoes on-site, received daily deliveries of fresh, never-frozen meat, and sliced tomatoes and onions by hand, while the lettuce was also freshly cut. Even though it's just fast food, their burgers are impressively fresh. I've heard quite a few horror stories from friends who worked in other fast food chains in California, but I can't recall a single negative experience about the food at In-N-Out. The stringent hygiene standards, including frequent hand washing, is one reason I keep coming back as a customer.

As an employee, there was a unique sense of pride and camaraderie among us, partly because the hiring process focused on recruiting sociable, cheerful people. I can't comment on Whataburger's standards as I've never tried them, but if they maintain a similar level of cleanliness, I'd consider giving them a chance.

Their Animal Style burger has its own unique features - chopped grilled onion (you can order whole grill as well), a patty cooked with a hint of mustard, added pickles, and a pre-packaged spread that's hard to replicate at home with different Thousand Island blends. Their buns are freshly baked every day too.

Things have evolved since my time there when we only accepted cash and didn't offer animal fries. However, employees would create their own version of it during breaks. My experience is based on my time at the Redondo Beach store, #92, before they expanded to other states.

The beautiful thing about In-N-Out Burger is, they live their value... from the menu, to the grill, to your vehicle on the way out the door, their hamburgers look how the how they portray them or to pick them, they take pride in service.

On an observational note, when a girl orders animal style, she's quietly saying "pull my hair please"

In and Out is addictive, that’s why the long lines. I understand the reasoning that, as a Texan, you’re memories of What a Burger are special but your generally good experience at In and Out will make for good memories too. In the long run, it’s all about what you feel like eating when you’re hungry; do I want In and Out? What a Burger? Or Taco Bell?
