it's so SO overshadowed how Lorena was SA-ed. she was painted as unstable and evil, and the whole court trial was a total shitshow.
she was a victim, she did what she had to so she could survive.

It's a miserable thing that she had to deal with such abuse, only to further be abused by the media. There is a thing called reactive abuse, in which the victim then portrays actions of an abuser towards the initial abuser (and possibly stemming to any abusers thereafter), so for her to have gone through all of that, I'm not surprised that he finished, she tried to calm down, and then did what she did, especially when she has her own battery against him on record (previous to the doinkus being severed). I'm also not surprised she punched her mom. It would take so many years to get back to a stable mindset and even then, that trauma is going to stick with her until her life comes to its own end. Truly a sad thing. Being a '92 baby, I grew up my entire life knowing about the story, just always forgetting their names because it's not something I often think about. I do remember how EVERYWHERE it was and I had learned about it from watching a news segment with my grandpa years after the fact (though still in the '90s). Wild stuff.

I actually got to meet Lorena and her boyfriend while I was working cruises on the East Coast (I think they live somewhere in VA, iirc). She’s a lovely person, and seems to be much happier nowadays. He treats her like a queen.

The way she was treated was horrendous, I’m glad she’s found peace after all that abuse.
