The Cornish Island That Witnessed Britain's Introduction To Christianity | Time Team | Odyssey

Legends surround this tiny island off Cornwall's south coast, including a visit by Christ himself, brought here by Joseph of Arimathea from distant Glastonbury. The team are out to discover the truth behind the myths. Could this island have witnessed the birth of Christianity in Britain? They are hampered by the tide, which limits the time allowed for digging. Previous digs have linked the now-vanished St. Michael's Chapel on the hill to the Celtic dark ages following the Roman occupation.

Odyssey is your journey into the world of Ancient History; from the dawn of Mesopotamia to the fall of Rome. We'll be bringing you only the best documentaries that journey into the mysteries and ruins of worlds long lost.

I wish you all could keep filming the dig to show us everything.

"Glastonbury as the first English theme park" haha. That's a great description also of what's now turned into a Disney dreamworld for hippies, would be goddesses, and artists in residence, most of the time amused by drink-and-drugs. In summer, crowded by wanderers who are lost in the desert of their lives.

I'm just here to enjoy Phil, Tony, and the rest of the fabulous Time Team. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I wish they would do follow-up videos to show what the continues digs have discovered. I doubt that they just end after three days.

I want to know more about the Cist burials on the island and their dates, wish there could be a second part to it.

Stunning initial guesswork on finding the chapel inside a wooden fence, lol!!

Those stones with holes in them served a multitude of purposes from door closers to beam balance counterweights for scales. Only the large ones served as anchors--the others were often counterweights for well sweeps, window or shutter counterbalances and openers, you name it. Some were even used as sinkers for long line fishing, with a bladder or wooden float. What they do indicate is early settlement--but not really useful to date anything because they have been used throughout history and in some remote areas of the world they are still in use today.

I love Mick & Phil arguing over the beach stone as they first arrive. You can't switch off those brains.

Ya’ll gotta chill. There’s all these people in the comments getting way too caught up in whether they believe Jesus really came here or did that. Honestly ya’ll can be any flavor of Christian, atheist, agnostic, Wiccan or anything in between but this ain’t the place to get yourselves caught up in a debate about what that means for Jesus. It was a nice episode, why don’t we talk about that?

That western corner was probably where the Sacrarium was located. When the sacred vessels and linens are tended to after Mass, the water must go into the ground. They dug the hole so the water would go into earth instead of running down the rock.

It would have been a perfect strong hold for the Templars...

Three days is just not enough time for any of these digs.

They're not looking for Jesus. They're looking for a chapel.

A child Jesus playing on a Cornish beach sounds like something Monty Python would make up.
