As an umpire I've been in that situation. Begin to call one way and then stop and change it. I'm really bad when im behind the plate. Sometimes I'll start to make the strike call and then stop myself

great timing, wrong call. Kid was safe by a step.

Lets take a minute to commend the kid for his correct mechanics. Hustle getting inside the line lining up 90 degrees from the throw and Having OK timing albeit with some hesitation. Im a 23 year old umpire of 6 years. There are not enough young guys in this profession. And it's hard enough to call a play in the moment. Let alone deal with the criticisms. Every umpire has done this. Keep honing your craft and don't stop.

You have a banger here. I can see it called either way. You also have a teenage umpire working bases. You can tell from his body language getting in place. With that said, I have seen seasoned umpires do what he did. Start with the safe and pop the out (or vice versa). It happens.

I would say he was safe. I think the runner makes it closer by stepping on the back of the base instead of the front. The title says he hesitated but if anything he started to make the call a little quick and that is why he started the safe sign.

Safe. Ump has to watch the bag and listen for the ball to hit the glove. There is a different sound when the foot hit the bag.

safe.
with the ability to slow it down/pause, it's far closer to a tie than it is an out.
but we all know that umpires have more fun calling people out than they do safe.
Outs are exciting while calling safe is boring.
Very few umps are able to resist the excitement and, at this level, they're authority is unquestioned and cannot be overturned.
