Al Green squeezed every bit of juice out of this song with his riffs and falsetto flourishes.
He left nothing in this song. Brother kilt it. Totally.

It doesn't get any better than Al Green ❣️ he's the very epic Soulman of all time ❤️

He took a little R&B, mixed in a little jazz, some soul and a dash a church to craft this vocal.

Breakbeats.

Have mercy this man. He gave new meaning to the 2 piece suit. Soo glad I was I a teenager at the time when he was putting out records & guesting on many TV shows. The man was sooo hot!

Where did all the soul go? Listen to those horns and Listen to Al!

I love his music, especially the earliest recordings, with the scratch sounding horns. The arrangements, production, songs, just fit together perfectly. his voice going from gruff to falsetto, He is constantly changing his vocal delivery, talking, singing, adlibbing. Like he listened to all the Black singers of his day, and just moved thru their techniques every few words.. Yet, it is pure and unadulterated, it just flows out of him, naturally.

I grew up watching this show in NYC. The series was the greatest show ever to be on TV. Way ahead of it's time. It not only featured Famous black performers singing live at a time when everyone but the Ed Sullivan show had their performers lip syncing but they had many interviews by the most prominent black news figures. Many with Muhammed Ali while he was fighting to get his crown back. The greatest poets of that time period like Nikki Giovanni. National leaders like Louis Farrakhan. There were dance troupes and Plays performed. You never knew what was going to be on the show from week to week. Also in a time when there was no home recording systems WNET aired the shows twice a week. Sunday and Thursday.

The incomparable Al Green. And as if Al Green wasn't enough, you've got a sublime funky drummer setting the rhythm like no one else can. Geez...
