it wasn't for nothing. chicago needs a salary to bring them to the floor of the cap. ottawa needs the cap space for a defenceman. its about creating space for a different trade before the deadline. it's about a tank, and a run.

I was concerned. Looking at Chicago's roster the other day I was like, "Dang, I don't think they have enough grossly over priced defensemen on their roster."

This was a solid step towards resolving that.

Getting traded for future considerations must be a bit of a blow to your ego...but seems like a good trade for everybody involved

as a chicago fan i hate the tank bc its bad for the league but it is what it is but in my opinion its not like the team is gonna be making a playoff push in 2 years so i say why not give a guy another shot at a new role we did it with Domi and he’s thriving in Chicago same with Jason Dickinson

If a team is tanking, after bad goaltending with Mrazek the next thing you want is bad dmen I think this was a great deal for both teams

This is what Vancouver never does. So you see how costly getting rid of bad contracts like OEL and (in about 3 years) JT Miller is going to be…

Oh yeah so it’s cool when other teams do it but when Vegas does it, trades People for nothing you guys laugh at Vegas for it? You sound like a hypocrite dude. Because when Vegas traded max Pacioretty for future considerations you laughed at Vegas. But yet you’re not laughing at Ottawa for this? When Vegas traded max Pacioretty to get 7 million off the books.

This is actually great for both teams. Ottawa now has the internal cap space to resign DeBrincat and maybe bring in a rental to make a final push.

For Chicago, not only do they get the picks, they also get cap floor salary for next year after Toews and Kane are gone while still sucking. It's why Zaitsev was on the Sens for so long.

Zaitsev had been playing better (a low bar) lately, and I do believe he is NHL caliber defenseman. Like a 6-7 slotting though. He helped shelter Ottawa's younger, developing defensemen by taking tougher assignments than he should have, and he did it professionally and with class, even as the fan base turned on him. Wishing him all the best in Chicago.
