CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray's (Kevin Costner) dream comes true when he gets to have a game of catch with his father (Dwier Brown).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
"If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year.

This scene makes grown men cry because we see a man reconcile with his father and show him that he loves him after years of distance and anger. In real life it's not always that easy, and many men are painfully aware when watching this clip that they'll never have a reconciliation with their own fathers the way these two men do in this movie. But Hollywood lets us dream, and so we cry because we wish this story for ourselves and are touched by its beauty.

My father passed away several months ago. One of my memories this scene triggers is my dad coming home from the factory on a hot summer night all tired and sweaty. Yet when he saw me waiting for him with two mitts and a ball he would drop his lunch bucket and somehow find the energy to play catch with me for as long as I wanted. Rest in peace, dad.

26 years later,   "Hey Dad? You wanna have a catch", gets me every time. Costner's delivery is perfect.

When he finally relents and calls him "Dad"... Just wonderful.

Lost my dad when I was 14 now I am 48 and I still wish I could have a catch with him, just one more time. I have played pro ball but nothing will ever take the place of a catch with my dad. Tomorrow is the anniversary of his death. 4/4/81. I will always love you.

Took a girl I really liked to see this film - first date.
Blubbered uncontrollably (along with pretty much every guy in the theater) during this scene. She was not impressed - guess I was too 'wimpy' for her. That was the end of that potential relationship.
After that, knowing I would choke up, I rented the DVD, and watched it with a new girlfriend.
She cried too.
Married her!

appreciate your parents while they are here. I lost my dad on my 25 birthday and I'm 40 now and I miss him so much. I hope he's proud of me. Thank you God for letting my mother still be here...

The way Costners voice cracks when he asks his dad if he wants to have a catch is when you cue the waterworks.

I know that for Americans, baseball means a lot. I'm a Brit with no interest in the game, but this film makes me weep uncontrollably. I see the baseball as a symbol of what brings fathers and sons together, and how important it is that parents spend time with their children, time being the most precious thing a parent and child can give each other, after love.

RIP Ray Liotta

I know what’s coming in this scene, yet all 100 times I’ve watched this movie I still cry as hard as the 1st time as soon as he says “Hey Dad”. Favorite movie ever.

It took a few viewings, but I finally got the emphasis on their last handshake. It's a really long one that encompasses a thousand unsaid apologies between the two of them. Like a "Please....don't let go."  We men just have a hard time with our words at times.  Say what you have to say to those who matter before it's too late.  Not all of us live in Iowa.

I'm not the biggest baseball fan, however this movie/score had a huge impact on me as a young teenager.  At the time, I was still grieving my father's young death and this movie helped me in so many ways to come to term with that natural course of life.  Thank you Mr Horner and say 'hi' to my dad and tell him I cannot wait to have a catch.
