HOW TO HANDHOLD A LARGE TELEPHOTO LENS

This video is a short quick tip on the proper technique for holding a large lens. If you have ever wondered how pros get such sharp photos hand held with giant lenses this quick tip is the key. Now, that being said, I shoot with this lens on a tripod as much as I can but sometimes when shooting sports or in other quick moving situations I need to go handheld this is the technique that has pulled me through for over 40 years!

Very useful reminder Kirk. Especially about the elbow information.

I was about to try and explain this to someone, but your video does it so much better! (She's about to buy that same lens)

I just bought a lense like the one you just showed us. Can't wait till it gets here. Thank you for showing me the proper way.

This is an awesome tip. I'm guilty of using the "elbow out" position! Thanks for uploading this!

Spot on Kirk, that’s a great help, I was trying to grip the tripod bracket when it was rotated under the lens but it wasn’t that flash for the brace position...

Precise and concise, Mr. Williamson. I just recently bought a Sigma 100-400mm to test out with my 7D Mk2. I'm looking forward to testing out the beast using the hand holding techniques. I just want to feel more free taking photos of wildlife without the constraints of a tripod ( even though they're an essential tool when using huge telephoto lens and for wildlife photography).

I have small hands and even though the canon rf 24-70 isn’t a long lens it’s heavy. Just ordered a harness strap but do you have tips for me with that given my smaller petite hands and finding the lens heavy? I have a monopod and tripod but sometimes I will need to hold it.

I just got the Sony 100-400 mm GM lens. Jesus, i have never been able to shoot a sharp pic, even just a stay still object while handholding it. I can't always carry a tripod. How did YouTube people get sharp pics of birds without tripod? What's the setting?
Thanks

I like my system better Kirk, I rest the XF 100-400 on my mother in law’s shoulder, just like a bazooka (LOL), my wife just saw the comment, I’m sleeping on the couch tonight. Stay safe.

You're putting all that weight on the camera body's mount when you're not holding the lens
