The spear and beads story in Luo history is a powerful symbol of leadership, transition, and legacy. The spear, embodying strength and duty, signifies the warrior’s role in defending the people, while the beads, representing wisdom and diplomacy, highlight the importance of governance through dialogue. Rt. Bishop McBaker Ochola’s narration captures how true leadership balances force with wisdom, and power with restraint.

This tale is more than history—it is a call to honor tradition while embracing change. The passing of the spear and beads marked pivotal moments in Luo migration and governance, ensuring leadership was not only about conquest but also about vision. It teaches that brute force alone is not enough; true authority comes from uniting strength with intellect.

In today’s world, this lesson is more relevant than ever. Leaders must wield both the spear and the beads—courage to act, wisdom to guide. The Luo legacy is clear: without balance, power crumbles. This is history with a lesson that must never be forgotten...

This is a good narrative! He has forgotten the Dinkas (Jieng), Nuer and Atuot tribes in South Sudan who were migrating together with the Luos from Egypt. He has also forgotten to point out that the Luos were primarily in Bor and Bhar el Ghazal areas of South Sudan prior to their movement southwards to present-day Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania...But generally he is a well informed elderly man of God in deed! Hopefully God shall bless him for us.
