That is a great question!  There are many factors I would say weigh into the decision when starting a collection.

1. You have to decide on if you want an "iconic" weapon first.  Do you want your first prop replica to be something everyone will recognize?  If so, maybe you should buy the sword of Aragorn as King: Anduril, Gandalf's Sword: Glamdring, Thorin's Sword: Orcrist, or even if you want to start small, the sword of Bilbo/Frodo: Sting.

2. If No. 1 does not make you decide, then I would say go with your personal style.  Some people love the Dwarven designs, others cannot live without all the Elf weaponry.  If you like the more natural designs of Mother Earth, maybe Legolas' daggers or Tauriel's knives will be more to your liking.  Maybe you love the geometric shapes of the dwarves and want the sword of Kili or Fili.

3. Budget.  We aren't made of money, well at least I am certainly not, so definitely consider your budget.  You can start small with buying Sting or Fili or Kili's sword for under $140.  Most of the other items are still well under $200 and there are a few that are in the $250-$350 range (Maces, helmets, etc.)

4. Lastly, if you still cannot decide, just pick your favorite Hobbit or Lord of the Rings character and get his/her sword!

Overall, you cannot go wrong with any choice and the only other factor that should weigh into your decision is limited editions.  For example, United is only making 1500 Sauron Maces.  Last one I got for my customers was in the mid 400's and they just came out!  So if you are interested in any of the limited pieces, I would recommend letting that weigh into your decision as well.

And just to answer my own question...

It is a hard decision for me, but it is between Turgon and Fingolfin from the Silmarillion.

The arrow heads in the movie were made of Elven steel.
