Edit: this comment got more attention then I was anticipating, one thing I want to clear up is that the shift knob is not made by bmw. The Supra mk5 has a b58 engine in it which is manufactured by bmw but this engine is the only thing in the car made by them. Either way it doesn’t matter who made it, the shift knob works correctly when you use it correctly, as long as the manufacturer put it into place right.

Toyota and bmw from factory doesn’t use glue to keep the shift nob cover down, but it’s held in by a plastic tab that goes into the slot cut, all you have to do is slide it back on and give it a good wack down and it shouldn’t come up again

The knob is held in with plastic clips, basically a friction fit. It's going to come loose if you yank on it, that's designed to happen
