Kriegler (1990:85) says in this respect, “The learner must learn to judge himself meta-cognitively while he is reading – like a (sympathetic and sensible) spectator who watches his performance and gives advice on when, how and which strategies need to be applied.”
• Clarification of reading aim – the reader must check himself.
• He must understand what the task demands.
• He must be able to distinguish the most important essences.
• He must focus his attention on what is important.
• He must monitor himself to see if he understands what he is reading.
• He must evaluate the success that he achieves with reading. Does he, in other words, achieve his target?
• He must be able to correct his mistakes, reread what he does not understand or ask for help if necessary.
• After interruptions he must be able to start reading again without losing the thread.
