I work in a library and I do not exaggerate when I say that it's becoming a cultural and physical battleground. I've had veiled death threats lobbed at me, people are checking out our books specifically to throw them away, destroying library property, impeding community services, and, as of yesterday, screaming in my face about how they're going to get me fired. Someone threw a stool through our window awhile back. Meanwhile I hear stories of entire school systems firing their librarians and shuttering their libraries after failing to get books banned. It's horrific out here, folks, and I don't know what to do about it except keep showing up and serving those who need us, and taking the abuse as it comes.

Now I want to leave banned books in every free little library box I find, especially in Fishers and Noblesville. Banning books is the least American thing I can think of. I want to be the Johnny Appleseed of controversial literature.

I'm a school librarian in Sweden and I have put up all your books on display in a special place. Yes, it is favoritism but I'm the only one working there so I can do what I want and what I want is for the kids to have the same experience I had when reading your phenomenal books for the first time as a teenager. Trust me, if y'all contact a candidate you want to support and ask if you can hand out flyers or do some doorknocking they will be absolutely thrilled to have you.

Until recently I was a librarian. The library I worked for was not one in Indiana but like the ones there, it targeted your books (specifically Looking for Alaska). You actually tweeted at one point about it. I just want to say that you are so inspiring. I was one of the people at that time that was supposed to assess whether one of your books was properly placed --we all said it should stay where it was, but that ended poorly. I'm sorry culture warriors cause these problems for authors like you and librarians like me and I hope things get better for us all.

My daughter discovered you and your books as a young teen. She devoured them and then told me I had to read them. I loved every word. My daughter and I had amazing conversations around them. They are a part of my "banned books collection. If they make these hateful people upset you are doing something right!!

A librarian trying to ban a book? My Great Aunt, who was a librarian for decades, and, was quite a prude, would be rolling in her grave. Even she knew that this is a shameful practice. 😔
