Original airdate: 1/4/2018 | You could say the Newhards are animal people.

They have four little dogs who complete their family.

But Tuesday, they had come to tearful terms that they had lost one.

"Never crossed my mind that that would ever happen," says Monica Newhard.

Tuesday afternoon, the dogs went out into the yard to play, as usual.

Monica says her brother was the one who was home and let them out. He looked up and saw a majestic eagle circling…but then, it swooped down.

"He's thinking 'what beautiful wings' and then all the sudden he's going, 'Oh my god, that's Zoey!" Monica says, recalling what her brother saw.

In a flash, little eight-pound Zoey was gone, flying out of sight, clutched in the eagle's talons.

The family desperately began searching near their home on the Lehigh River. They say the temps were in the single digits. The water had frozen, and they realized, the eagle must've been looking for alternatives for food.

They put a picture on Facebook, hoping they'd at least get the body back, so they could bury her.

"Never were we looking or ever thinking that our dog would be alive. It was dead, you know?" Monica says.

We had small dog like that also named Zoie. She was a Maltese that was the runt of the litter that peaked at 3.5lbs. We had so many owls in our area that we had to escort her every time she went out the door - every day of her life.

No wounds? Eagle just let her go for no reason?

Are we sure the "brother" didn't make up the eagle story because he was stoned and left the gate open?

EDIT: Please stop spamming my inbox with "b-but there's a video" unless you provide a link. I already addressed this. Take the hint and stop trolling.

Many dogs & cats are carried off and/or killed by the big birds. Bald eagles rarely do this. So very happy the dog is safe. ❤

I saw the article on my browser, and it took me to the Instagram post, and I had to Google it to see what happened. I'm so happy that sweet little dog survived. She looks like such a sweet baby. I'm so happy for them.

That dog bit the eagle so hard, the eagle had to let it go or something like that.

I live in Nashville and a few years ago I was told about someone's
cousin that had this happen to their poodle puppy. Monica Newhard, so glad your baby is
safe! Thanks Christina and YES there is and always has been a God!!! :)

My chihuahua was almost grabbed by a Hawke last year. I don't have a garden but I do have a yard and fortunately having my umbrellas up that day saved her life.
So I've put decorative buntings in the yard which is triangle flags, in a Zig-Zag across the yard to prevent my chihuahua taking flight!

BS If the eagle grabbed that small dog in her talons and flew away, even if the eagle dropped her she would have serious punctures!

Never let little dogs out without effective supervision. The dog squirmed too much and became too heavy for the Eagle. Thank God she’s home safe, though this is years old by now.

Aww, looks like the dog didn't even get a scratch. Impressive. Wonder dog!

WOW! That dog is very lucky. Usually Eagles strick the killing blow when they swoop down and grab its prey. If you look at an Eagles talons you will see why that dog is so lucky. Eagles talons are razor sharp and very long.

My theory is ... This was a completely different dog. A look alike.
