(n.) A devil or fiend.
(adj.) In a state of confusion or disarray; disordered or disheveled.

From French “rufian” from Italian “ruffiano” from “roffia” (filth) from Germanic “hruf” (scurf) (akin to Old High German ruf, Old English hreof) from Indo-European base “kreup-” from Lithuanian “kraupus” (rough).
