The CRF450L has a very low cargo and rider weight limit of 220lbs. Its lower than the models KTM offers, lower than the CRF250l and XR650l. So why is this bike rated so low? Today we're trying to see if we can figure out why its rated as it is vs its competition. Be sure to subscribe to the channel if you enjoy this video!

I’m 6’4” and 280-290 depending on where I’m at in my yoyo. I was bummed about the weight limit cuz it’s sucks being too heavy. But you know what? I’ve got the bike, I’m loving it. And I’m just gonna send it!

Lets see... My bike set up for ADV weighs in at 315 lbs full of gas. I weigh 200 with gear on. Fully packed my luggage weighs 50 lbs. At 275 lbs combined I think the CRF450L works just fine as is, though you may want to add a few clicks to the compression and rebound. I'm going to go with your lawyer theory. Great video!

Honda really was the one company that paved the way in this country...( They have not been as aggressive for a long time ) ...this goes back to the atc of the 80s

The night I brought my 450 RL home I read the manual. I immediately felt attacked when I read the 220 LB limit. Was like "WTF, really ?!"I'm 250 and I jump it anyway. Limit be damned!

the 450L is a sexy bike and Honda dont want people putting luggage all over it. thats what a DR650 is for. i think the Honda is for trails but also highway to get to the trails.

Just thinking here, but maybe they specify a weight bc they had to test it to DOT specs. You mention the x and the r that don't have a specific weight limit, but neither have to be approved with dot and epa. So it might be they only tested up to 220 lbs on the 450l for those certificates therefore why they mention that weight limit in the manual.

IF is awesome, With that and Keto I have dropped about 70 pounds. Still to heavy for the 450L. BUT works out fine on my R1250GSA.

I'm pretty sure the weight limit has to do with staying within emission standards, more weight equals more load on engine which uses more fuel and air. My guess, since the 450R and 450x have no emissions controls and both have no weight limit

Bro... awesome video. You make some really good points. But check it out... you’re in your 40s and actually got motivated to loose weight which takes load off your bike but also I’m sure you’ve noticed improvement in your riding. I’m 51 and most of the dudes I ride with are my age and older. More than half of those guys are lugging around at least 30 extra pounds. I’m sure you’ve seen this too. Many of theses guys are still really good riders and pushing their bikes (or at least trying to) like they did in their twenties. I guess my point is, I’ve yet to see any catastrophic frame or suspension failure or anything going wrong with the bike that could be attributed to too much weight on the bike. Yes, we’ve seen forks bottom out from time to time but just like you did in your video, a bigger dude can upgrade springs, oil...etc. I agree with you that Honda is being super careful and underrating the capacity. Maybe since the bike is basically the CRF450 moto bike, with DS kit, they expect riders to push it harder than the 250L and 650L which both started life as DS bikes. Anyway, thanks for letting me babble and thanks for the great content.

I have to agree with you on how ridiculous the weight limits are for NA. I am a KTM and Honda fan and I find it annoying that I have to buy new springs with every new bike. KTMs are sprung for about a 180 lb. rider. Who the f*** weighs 180 lb with gear in NA?

For the KTM comparison....there is no way an excf will take 495 cargo and rider. Something is getting lost in translation. There isn't even a subframe for the rear fender ... just a plastic rear fender structure. I am a 220 lb rider in gear and I had to change out the rear spring just to deal with my weight without ANY cargo.

I do however want to point out that the 250, 350, and 500 excf are all about 50 lb curb weight lighter than the 450L. I know it doesn't explain anything but ... maybe it's a start.

Btw I am thinking about getting the 450RL or the 300L. I've had the 250L before.

33 year olds 125 lbs and 5'10 from Houston TX. And That bike is made for people like me. Not to hate on the bigger folks but that is a race machine designed and built to be rode by racers (whom are all tiny fellas like me... ) you don't want a big guy as your racer and that's what the R at the end of the name stands for... Racer.

Interesting about the KTM. The new KTM 500s have carbon fiber subframes, and can't possibly be as strong as Honda's aluminum s/f. FYI, the weight limit (max axle load) for the 2020 KTM 350 EXC-F is also 700+ lb. So...
