I have an odd question, it is often said that the Civil War was the dress rehearsal for WW1, so given that it them awhile to introduce helmets in WW1 would helmets have benefited Civil War soldiers?

I hold a PhD too. McPherson's anaylsis with the conception of the war being won by superior Northern organization and management is highly misguided. The Northern leadership were at serious odds with each other. Grant never got a handle on his subordinates. One example is Grant's repeated threats to fire generals such as George H. Thomas over in Tennessee. The Northern forces suffered from severe organization and communication divisions. Teagards...
