Hydraulic power steering systems require regular inspection for leaks. The system relies on a constant supply of clean hydraulic fluid which can be interrupted when there is a leak in the system.

In addition to checking for leaking power steering hoses it's also critical to replace your power steering reservoir with every system flush. The power steering reservoir includes an integrated filter which cannot be replaced separately.

When refilling your BMW's power steering system please take note of the color of the fluid fill. A yellowish fluid fill indicates a CHF11S fill and red fluid indicated an ATF/DEXIII fill. Please order the correct fluid for your vehicle separately.

The reservoir filter is just a simple wire mesh. Bolted with a T25 Torx. It should never need to be replaced. A bit of brake cleaner through it will clean it up good as new. The only thing that ever needs replacing on the reservoir is the cap gasket for about $2. FCP carries the gasket. Crush washers for the banjo bolts, new seals for the pump and spiral hose clamps to replace the OEM hose clamps and 95% of problems solved. Everyone seems to be trying to sell a kit that just about no one ever needs to do basic Power Steering maintenance.
