I read city of god while I was in college. I was deeply troubled at the time because I was starting to question why I was doing everything and who I was.
One of the pillars I had at the time was religion and I had already read the entire bible, but I wasn't sure about the religious institution itself. After reading the book, I fell into depression and one of the reasons is because I realized that I had no faith in the church. There wasn't enough logic and the logic I found had too many holes.
I realize that I fell into that depression because I was too radical. I could still take the principles I had learned and just find new meaning that suited me. Nowadays I'm still not 100% happy, but I am content. I know who I am and my principles guide me well.
