Elvis grew up in black church and has a blues background. That and church gospels were the music that spoke to his soul. When MLK was assassinated Elvis took it hard since they were friends. He dedicated this song to MLK. He put all his heart and soul into it. He meant every word. He did this song in one take and when he was done he was wrecked. They found him curled in a ball crying his eyes out. He just wanted equality for everyone. His manager didn’t want him to sing the song saying it was too controversial but Elvis didn’t listen and sang it anyways because it was important to him and he wanted to get his message across.

Elvis changed the world……..Elvis is the only performer to be in the Rock-Country-Blues-Gospel Hall of Fames.
The greatest performer ever!

Elvis was doing a tribute to MLK, as He had just been killed. king of rock and roll. James Brown was one of Elvis best friend and set by his casket when Elvis died. Elvis was an advocate for Black singers because in the 50's it was so segregated white stations wouldn't play black artists till he changed that. You need to react to "Elvis Presley and the Black Community". Then you'\d know the struggles he had. Thank you and Be blessed

I am fortunate to say I saw this performance live back in 1968, televised on NBC and nothing could top that. But what amazes me the most, is 55 years after this song was released, a new set of young people are digging this great talant and his tribute to MLK!
Elvis was, the complete package!

Elvis hated racism. He grew up in a black neighborhood and went to a gospel church. He never saw color, he saw the person and treated everyone the same.

Elvis grew up very poor there were only four white families in his neighborhood. His childhood friends were black, i think this is where he got the soul. He sang in a gospel choir in a black church while he was in high school. He is a very humble kind man who never forgot where he came from. Great reaction i subbed.thank you

You have a credible ear because Elvis grew up in a gospel church and he was, is, and will always be the king of music to me.

Elvis was a man that never forgot where he came from. Raised with nothing in Tupelo Mississippi. A man who was heavily influenced by where and what he came from. A man known for his extreme generosity because he came from nothing. Elvis touched people of all creeds and colors. Elvis is for everyone.

Elvis sang with emotion like no one else, it’s like he lives the songs he’s singing and makes you feel it. You must check out more of his live performances and you’ll see the wide range of his vocals and styles.

When Elvis was in High School, he actually would sing with the Black Babtist choir, & Gospel was his most favourite songs to sing. The three Grammy Awards he won, were for three Gospel Albums he recorded. Elvis also recorded several Blues songs, so again you picked up well on that. He had a great Blues voice, & if he had gone down that music route, he would have done very well, because he had such a unique & wonderful voice, & such great control over his vocals. He is actually in Five Halls of Fame. Of course, he is known as the King of Rock ‘n Roll.

"virtually impossible to pigeonhole." Elvis Presley's three-octave vocal range was exceptional, 'very narrowly all at once a tenor, baritone, and bass'."
