What is going on with PAGASA? Their current staff of weathermen have been statistically POOR in their forecasting for the past few years.
This typhoon for example, a couple of days ago, PAGASA forecasted that it would likely be out of the the PAR & make landfall in TAIWAN today, Wednesday (July 26). This estimate is obviously WAY OFF..
Of course, deviations in forecasting is expected, but there is an acceptable level for any of this to considered useful.
It was mentioned in an old article that PAGASA's best & most tenured were being lured away by better pay abroad. This is just sad for a country that is visited by more than a few superstorms every year.
On another occasion, alarms were raised to the highest level for supposed landfall of 'supertyphoon' Mawar (heck, my neighbors went panic buying) two months ago but for some reason the weather turned out to be as sunny in general.
Now what would this kind of forecasting with less & less credibility do to your regular folks' way of thinking especially in the countryside? They will subconsciously ignore or pay less attention to the warnings. It is frustrating & honestly a point of contention. But this what did the people of Visayas in during Haiyan/Yolanda's onslaught..
