In this video we start a fire using the Solar Fire Starter. This is a great bushcraft survival skill to know how to do. This is part of a fire making series I am doing which includes videos on: Friction fire - Bow Drill Fire, Hand Drill Fire, Fire Plow, Fire Thong, Fire Piston, and more.

That might have been the most excited I've ever heard Shawn when that started smoking

Radio shack sold these in the 1970's and as boy scouts, we always were hunting an easier way to light a fire without a lighter or matches. However, it would ignite a wet match really quick.

As an adult scout leader, this looks to be very useful and necessary for my bugout bag. Dry material is always a must. Great short

Even when you're not sharing about traps, you come up with something very useful. I'm also a fan of solar ovens and wish more people would use them where wood resources are rare. Thanks and Happy New Year, Shawn!

If I was trapped on an island and if there is enough sunlight, the only one item I need is a magnify glass. Endless fire. Well, a pair of dark sunglasses too or welding goggles.

This solar fire starter is promising too. I had one when I was a kid but did not know how to use it. Now, thanks to this video, I do.

I think your previous experience in fire craft really makes this particular device give you greater value. For a person inexperienced with being able to start a fire unassisted without matches, ect. It might take them considerably longer and possibly they might not be able to use it to get a fire going.

Yes they really work. I bought one years ago and tested it. Pretty amazing for such a low cost, low tech tool. Definitely add this to your B.O.B. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏾

Back when I was a kid, The Shaq Of Radios sold a "solar cigarette lighter". Had the doodad in the middle that folded sideways so you could carry it flat in a little plasticky pouch.
That, and the microwave-oven leakage tester, I wish I'd bought dozens when I had the chance.

I have one of these probably 35 years old with a stainless steel reflector called a solar cigarette lighter. I put it in my survival pack.

I call my glasses my personal solar lighter. I honestly only carry a flint/steel combo with dry, sealed tinder in my backpacking gear for if my matches get wet, my traditional lighter gets busted or runs out of fuel, and I lose my glasses.

Either way, if I lose my glasses I'm screwed unless I have a trained-up dog with me or a more experienced buddy, let's be honest.

I kayak while backpacking (pack gear on the kayak, kayak to point A, hike out from point A to point B with kayak secured at point A, then eventually return to kayak to return to vehicle. There's always a chance that I could lose my prescription glasses and sunglasses when capsized, but it hasn't happened yet!

You could probably design a waterproof fire starting pellet to fit the holder and make it much easier/ reliable

Great Video, I didn’t expect that to work as fast as it did!

I just use a cheap plastic pocket lighter. But that was a cool demo Shawn.

I did this with one of those old lantern battery flashlights, you put the tinder in where the bulb goes and point it straight at the sun
