Your First Lesson in Rhythm: Beats, Notes, Tempo

This will be your first rhythm lesson. Well this lesson for beginners will help you understand the main concepts behind rhythm such as beats, time signatures, note durations, and measures. After this easy lesson, you will understand the definition of these and how they apply to the overall concept of rhythm. This lesson is geared toward piano players, but the concept of rhythm is the same for all instruments. Some important things to remember from this lesson is that a beat is a regular interval of sound. A measure helps break up the music into easily digestible sections. A time signature tells you how many beats fit in a measure and rhythm is a combination of note durations which tell you how long to play a note for.

Just coming back to music and I’m so glad I learned how rhythm works in school cause it made this lesson a lot easier to comprehend

It would really help if you played us samples of the 1/4, notes and 1/8, notes, so on and so forth. This would make this lesson more understandable for most. You can call 1/4, a quarter note, but It doesn’t do people any good if they don’t have an example.

the first number refers to the number of times one has to set the beat, and the bottom number is the "type" of note you have to use; quarter, eight, two, etc.

I know this is a bit late but thank you! Now I know how to use the time signature. There are (top number) (1/X) notes in a measure. Nice little equation. Thanks again!
