Nice look at this. I do like that the Yi is almost half the price - 20 circular mounted GoPros at $10, 000 vs 20 circular mounted Yi's at $5000 - that's pretty darn significant! Thanks for keeping us all up-to-date. :)

Hey Dave, Xiaomi just introduced a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera called the M1 (20MP, 4K 30fps, ISO 25, 600).
Starts at $330 for the 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 kit or $450 for the 42.5mm f/1.8 kit.

Dave, thanks for review! Yi 4K - is fantastic camera. I've sold my old Hero 3 be and buy new Yi for the same money. Great! I get better quality, nice features etc. By the way, in Yi you can input exposure compensation (- EV) to avoid lose details in highlights. Good option.

Been looking forward to your thoughts on the Yi, I believe there is a flat picture profile on it, not sure if you used that but maybe that would solve the warm colours? Also I wonder if you could step down the exposure in the settings to expose the highs better then just pull the lows up in post? If it's anything like the HD Yi I know there was a lot of third party firmware floating around that may solve some of the issues? I'm interested to see what Gopro release but I'm really not expecting much... I think they have really dropped the ball of late and their prices are way inflated compared to the competition!

Hey Dave, was the GoPro shot in Protune or were you testing it with standard settings? Does the Yi have that ability and custom white balance, ISO limit etc?

I have the Yi 1080 and it's great. It does get hot though. The app is simple to load and use.

Awesome camera.

I don't like using apps when playing with my camera so I absolutely love the touchscreen of the Yi 4K. You can easily set it to go to standby after 15 seconds or so, so it won't screw up your battery life and gives you enough time to get the composition right.

Next to that, the audio is pretty fricking good for an action camera (as long as you won't use the waterproof case).

I left my DSLR at home for my last trip and just having the Yi around did the job every time, even though I'm having some serious hardware issues with it.

Anyways, if some of you are interested in ever buying one. I have some more sample footage up.

Does the YI have a flat color profile AND Prores codec? These two things are a must for me. Also very important are crop modes.

Thanks for the video. I was considering a GoPro, but now I'm probably going to save a couple hundred dollars! I'll wait until the announcement tomorrow to see what GoPro's bringing to the table.

We have both and We use the YI 95% of the time now! It all about the interface. GoPro needs to catch up and quick. I mostly use it indoors and switch between 4k video and time lapse.

Nice review, however, remember a lot of these type of products do get firmware updates over time that can fix problems or they change things to give you more control.

Fantastic, well-balanced review. While some other reviewers praise the Yi too much (almost making you think they were paid for it), you pointed out well the obvious strenghts and weaknesses. The GoPro still has slightly better image quality despite having 2-years old sensor. The price, however, speaks in the Yi favor combined with additional features including the display. Xiaomi/Yi did what they do best, take ideas from elsewhere and make almost the same-quality product with much lower price.
