An 8-Year-Old Backyard Food Forest in South Florida

Back in 2011 I started planting fruit trees with my parents in their small South Florida backyard. Now many of the trees are producing fruit and the back yard is a beautiful food forest jungle. This South Florida food forest is tiny but productive.

You can join me for my South Florida Food Forest worsk shop this coming Saturday:

And read more about this project here:

I don't understand people who would rather have a perfect lawn than a productive garden.

David, what I like about your channel, without saying it, you promote sustainable agriculture. One of the underlying premises of economic growth and development is if the primary sector is internally sustainable, then the country can develop along other economic lines. Your food forest here and wherever else you live are quasi off the grid is evidence to what can be done. I mean let's be honest, you almost feed a small village, or at least your family.

My husband and I attended your talk at your South Florida Food Forest yesterday, and it was great! We actually looked forward to trimming bushes and palm trees today, and dropping the trimmings in our newly mulch-cleared area around our banana plants. It was so freeing to know we won't have to worry about fitting it all into the trash can!! We're turning the whole corner of our yard into a food forest now!

Great info. The number of times you have mentioned your dad got so much water in my eyes, I will have to watch a second time.

Wow, thanks, David for showing us the food forest--awesome! Plus you helped identify a couple seedlings I have. I have two Carissa macrocarpa seedlings growing in a sunny window--I had no idea what they were but the scent of the flowers was enough to persuade me to take seeds from a bush near a parking lot when we were visiting my family in Florida last year. The fruit looked like it was "friendly" however, I would never eat anything I wasn't sure about--now I know I can eat the fruit. I recognized the bush immediately by the flowers and fruit as you were describing it. I plan to haul these babies outside for summer and back in for cold who knows maybe I'll get fruit someday.
The "num-num" must be a hardy plant. Our seedlings got minimal care and yet seem tough as nails. I need a "go fund me" for a solarium to grow all my semi-tropical dream

Hi David, I would really love to see your work AFTER you prune, clean and chop and drop these gardens as well as the thorough before video you have here. It's also great educationally for folks who're just learning these techniques. Thank you!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! So true about tough trees and wimps. The distinction is clear here in NC, too.

I heard the same thing about tamarind trees, but mine blew down, I planted another and it is leaning from hurricane Irma. My canistel blew down too. You have a nice selection of trees.

Love your Florida videos, because it relates to me because I have to be in same zone or very close in Tampa area.

I enjoyed the tour. Good to see you in this version of David. I grew up in Jacksonville, FL. Not quite as dead soil. I lived there until 84 when my husband was relocated to Waycross, GA. We are now retired and bought 10 acres in 2010 here in Waycross. We are working on planting fruit trees, shrubs, vines etc. Just wish I had all the info available now, back then. We would have well established trees by now. Oh well better late than never. We do grow vegetables in raised beds and in ground. Working on planthing now. By the way, you know why my thumbs are often green? Smashing bugs.🥑☀️🌦
