I love just the breaking down of the nuts and bolts of this creator/internet economy. It is so easy for people, especially kids, to see these platforms as some benevolent game. But we can only protect ourselves if we know what we are getting into, warts and all. None of these platforms are inherently evil but they will not protect *you* and it is important to understand that.

This is why it is important once you establish your audience on a platform to take your audience with you on your own platform through email lists or personal websites! These platforms are starting to punish creators for siphoning the audience that the creator has built!

the clarity and precision with which you describe the dissonance here is profoundly helpful - it’s a function of our profit driven system that these social media conglomerates refuse to participate if fair revenue sharing with the people who create tons (most) of the valid for these companies. i discovered Comradery over the weekend as a Patreon competitor and them prioritizing creator ownership and decision making is revolutionary but i wish it weren’t!

As a new creator words cannot express how much I appreciate this perspective and your honesty, the creator economy is so complex and difficult to navigate, and so many people overlook it because it is still a (relatively) new industry! However I do see that more and more creators are becoming increasingly transparent and thoughtful about the financial impacts of internet content, it's great to see!

I think you really hit the nail on the head with how platforms market themselves to creators. I find myself continuously having to reality check the working relationship of me and YouTube every time something changes in the algorithm. By all means, it sucks, but changes (and frankly desperation) tend to lead to new ways of making and marketing content. Personally, I think it forces me to make better content instead of just producing the same types of videos over and over and over again.
