How To Test Standard Batteries With A Multimeter (AA, AAA, C)-Tutorial

In this video, I show you how to test standard batteries with a multimeter. It is a simple tutorial, and I go over some basic steps that you can use to find out the voltage of some common batteries that you probably have lying around the house. These are the batteries that are commonly used in converters and various other small household electronics. With that being said, I show you the exact setting that you should be using on your multimeter, and where you should be putting the probes in order to get an accurate reading.

The information you probably came for!!
This depends on the device. A dead battery will have a voltage of 1.25 or less (Kid Toys, Motorized device), but some devices can run down to 1 volt (TV remote, calculator).

The guy didn't explain jack....video should have been titled: "this is how to make meaningless digits appear on your multimeter" Was the batteries he tested good or bad....we'll never know.

Some of the dumbest people I've known in my life openly thought they were smarter than everyone around them. I have a feeling this guy fits into that category. He's showing the part that most people already know how to do without giving you the info that's actually important... Like what the values of the readings hrs getting mean and what the battery voltage of a full battery should be. Instead he thinks people can't figure out that you test a AA battery the same as a C battery.

with all the complaints I am seeing in the comments I am surprised that some of you super techs aren’t catching the fact that he’s putting the positive lead on first. Young man this is supposed to be helpful for you. Whenever you’re using any kind of test equipment you always use the black or ground first otherwise if you use the other end first then your ground is already charged and that’s why you get sparks. Granted you’re not gonna get sparks from these little batteries but when you get into testing bigger stuff will have your current do you want to use your meter properly. Always use your black lead first. See folks I actually might helped him with something.

I don't know how anybody who got past the first 5 seconds of this video did it.
I don't care how helpful this video may be, but I'm not taking my chances in wasting my time.

Such an emotional AAA battery test, guy sounds like he reinvented the wheel

Only problem is you didn’t tell us what is an appropriate voltage for a battery to be functional.

this method doesn't tell you if the battery is still good or not as there is nothing really drawing energy from it

Thank you. My meter came with instructions about the plugs, but not where I should turn the dial for different batteries. I needed to test AA, so this helped.
Ignore the rude comments. Meters come with some sort of instructions, but may not be thorough enough for someone like me who never used one.

My dog cried the whole way through this video, stopped when it was over.

It's easier to hold your negative probe/negative side (flater side) down first...then attach the positive probe

This video made me realize TV and radio personalities actually are pretty high on something when they do their work.

So what's the standard for when after testing the battery you determine the battery is good or bad????

How do you know what voltage represent a dead battery? Is there a chart somewhere for different types of battery?

Wish you had explained which plug is which and what they’re used for. Otherwise, tested my battery successfully. Thank you.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm in this video I am afraid it provides incomplete information. Merely probing both poles of a battery, which is at rest (not powering any device), does not tell you if that battery has enough charge to maintain that energy flowing to do work. The correct way to tell would be to measure both poles while also placing a *load* in the circuit with the battery, such as a 100 Ohm resistor. The resistor will put the battery under load and, if the battery has enough charge left in it, then it will generate an electric current in the circuit and your multimeter will read a voltage close to the battery's rated voltage. However, if the charge left in the battery is very low, then the reading on your multimeter will show a noticeable lower voltage from the battery when it is under load as opposed to when it is at rest.

the definition why we MUST have a dislike counter. wasted a couple of minutes before realizing how bad the video was.
Frick you, youtube.

Never explained what the numbers mean. What is a good functioning battery supposed to read? What's 100%?

What is the lowest reading for a battery and it still be good?
