Quick story
In my gym i was deadlifting 140kg and a guy who strated working out maybe 4-6 months ago came to me and said don't re-rack the weight because he was going to deadlift too. he pulls 90kg with very rounded back. So i told him to correct it but the guy was like it doesn't matter. And doing 120kg for 8 reps with rounded back he went home and he never came from next day. His partner told me that he had injury in his back and currently he can barely do day to day tasks as his spine tilts to left and someday tilts to right all by itself. That really scared me and now i don't push myself very much. If i feel even a bit uncomfort or i feel my form break then i just lighter the weight or either stop the set.

Justin you got mad patience dealing with all these “NEVER round your back” and “stop ego lifting” comments.

I can’t straighten my back, it’s physically impossible

When I tried using "correct" flat back form, I pulled something in my back, whereas when I do rounded back dead lifts I feel great and I can load on more weight

Rounding the back reduces ROM and stretch on the hamstrings, fine if your spinal erectors are stronger than your hamstrings at the bottom of the deadlift. Probably better to stick to an arched lower back till you get to above 2x bodyweight then see what feels easier from there, most people have weak spinal erectors unless they have been deadlifting and rowing for years. Also sometimes as you get stronger and hamstring length increases you can be able to straighten your back after a year or 2 of rounded back deadlifts, that happened to me.

“There should be no roundness whatsoever at any weight” - the dude who struggles with 315 and tries to give advice.

Only really applies to more intermediate lifters. Beginners should stick to a straight back because chances are they aren't actually maintaining their back position as mentioned in the video

I find that slight rounding (using a posterior pelvic tilt to use a more neutral lumbar spine as opposed to extended lumbars, and using slight thoracic rounding) helps to improve my leverages but also gives me a bit better ability to fire through my glutes and hamstrings.

The key to doing this safely is to brace well and don’t allow increased rounding through the lift.

Great video👍

BIG FACTS🙌🙌

If you don’t go those long limbs! Don’t talk! You don’t know about leverage like my boy Justin 😤

Also lower back should NOT be rounded. That’s dangerous. The upper back can be rounded . Many great lifters have used that technique . Most notably Kostantin Konstantinovs (RIP)

I’ve recently started rounding my back because I hit a plateau and I’ve literally hit my pr from a week ago 2 or 3 singles a day, i think it’s specifically good for tall people bec we already start at a very small angle at the hips so using the rounded back just give that little bit more power at the start of the lift, I have been having a little more trouble locking out tho now

i round my back as much as you do but i pull conventional. what exercises can i do to prevent the default to rounding?

If you do round the lower back just know that you could lift more if you didn’t cuz your hips are further away from the bar

Dont round your back whatsoever. Either cervical, thoracic or lumbar. Keep a neutral spine at all times. Set your shoulders and engage your core. Cant do it? Lower the weight and put your ego aside.
