And then there's the episode where it's revealed Jesse was a name he picked at 5 and his birth name was HERMES.

I love how he said that these names sounded "too ethnic".

EVERY RACE AND NAME IS ETHNIC

"Are you ethnic?"

"No... MURICAN"

John Stamos (who is a real life mega Elvis fan) got inspired by Elvis for the character name “Jesse”. When Elvis’s mom was pregnant with Elvis she didn’t realize that she had been pregnant with twins. Jesse was Elvis’s twin brother who had been born first. Unfortunately, Jesse was born stillborn and Elvis never actually got to meet his twin brother. So basically John Stamos thought it would be a nice tribute to name the character after Elvis’s brother Jesse. The more you know.

And for those of you who are wondering “I thought it was Uncle Jesse?” Yes, he really is an uncle to the Tanner kids. Jesse is the brother in law to Danny Tanner (Bob Saget). Basically meaning, Danny’s wife (Pamela) was Jesse’s sister. So to the kids he is their uncle. Not that he was Danny’s brother.

Ramon Estevez Sr(Martin sheen) and Carlos Estevez(Charlie sheen)
Emilio didn't care so he kept it 💯

I loved Jesse SO MUCH growing up. The way he treated Michelle was so cute. And he was a singer, which was cool. He eventually grew out of his womanizing ways and it was all around a good character. The name was icing on the cake for me.

I am so tired of Indian actors having westernized names like Ana or John, just so people can feel comfortable.

That is awsome that John trying to help his Greek culture. I admire people who stand up for all cultures as long as it is done in a peaceful way.

Martin Sheen's real name is Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estevez and Charlie's real name is Carlos Irwin Estevez. I remember the first time I heard the real Estevez names, it became a thing when the younger son Emilio Estevez kept his real name and stamped himself as a recognized name.

And the question was, how tf are Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez full brothers? I still have a hard time looking at Martin and Charlie Sheen and seeing Ramón and Carlos, the father cultivated such an Anglo middle America persona and his son filled right in after him.

It's interesting. A lot of Greek actors chopped off the end of/shortened their surnames. Like Jennifer Aniston's actor father was the one who changed his name from Yiannis Anitios Anasstassakis to John Aniston.

I support people keeping their ethnic names. People say no one can pronounce it but to that I say, that's not true, and the people who can't just need to try a few times and they'll get it. It's not that hard. Really. A tiny amount of effort and the ability to admit you can't read something in order to learn how to read it. If you can't manage that, I'd suggest therapy lol.

For those saying that "everyone's names are ethnic" or "he's still white, how was he stereotyped?" This is how America saw things back then.

You know how everyone likes to roast the 20s-50s on how everything was bigoted towards women, minorities, and people with mental illnesses? That did indeed happen, however, white men didn't exactly pat each other on the back either.

Men of Italian backgrounds were often stereotyped/discriminated as s3xual deviants that preyed on young innocent girls until TV and movies started portraying them in a more sympathetic light. This is kinda how the greaser bad boy x pure perfect schoolgirl became a troupe.
The Irish were seen as drunk pagans that "wanted" to corrupt the Christian lifestyle of America. Remember that scene in Back to the Future where Biff called George an "Irish bug"? That was a real derogatory term towards offspring of Irish immigrants.
German used to be the 3rd language of America until WW1 came about. People then saw German-American citizens as "racist barbarians who were still loyal to the Kaiser." And yes, that statement is ironic.

See, America? You've always been like this.

I love john stamos for representing greeks. They needed representation back then(as shown in the video) and he gave it to them!

His name wasn't even difficult for my 5 year old self, I in fact thought his name was amazing and adored Uncle Jesse all around lol. I'm glad he was able to get the name to stick.

Does anyone else remember the episode where they find out Uncle Jesse's real first name is Hermes? I think they're trying to pick cool names for the twins and Becky and the girls find out lmao

This whole “let’s not make it too ethnic for Middle America” thing seems to have been a trend. 😑
