Airbus is Hamburg’s largest employer. About 13,000 employees work at the company’s Hamburg location assembling short-haul and long-haul aircraft. The manufacturing hangars are enormous - several soccer fields in size. One is also where Heike Otto works, heading an A320 final assembly line.

I was lucky enough to make a visit to this Airbus final assembly facility while visiting Hamburg. Truly a worthy counterpart to Boeing's Everett final assembly site.

Airbus General Headquarters are in Toulouse. The company was born in France under the initiative of Charles De Gaulle, with the original name of SNECMA. The company first built the Caravelle aircraft, then the Concorde in collaboration with the British. Later, SNECMA was associated to another French company; then several European states asked to join, including Germany.

Airbus and Boeing are not first and second or vise versa. They have been trading the number one spot back and forth for a number of years. That will probably continue until the Chinese and Russian airliners such as the COMAC C 919 begin to be sold and built in significant numbers. That will happen due to the severe restrictions placed by the Chinese and Russian governments on any foreign products which have domestic competition. The Chinese government is already ordering its domestic airlines to stop placing orders for foreign airliners and only order the domestic ones.

If the EU and the USA were to impose the same trade policies on Asian and Russian products, those countries would scream bloody murder. With the current administration in office, the USA is about to do just that. China, and other Asian nations are about to learn what the true cost of selective targeting, dumping, severe import quotas, high tariffs, subsidized state owned industries, currency manipulation, and other grossly unfair trade policies will cost them in the near future. The USA has a tradition of self sufficiency. We don't need trading partners who put us out of business and destroy our economy from within.
