Excellent summary of New York during the Civil War. My students are usually shocked to learn that NYC almost seceded with the South. They also get wrong my question on their "Civil War" test when I ask them where the largest race riot in the United States occurred when they learn that they more than likely have walked through the scene in lower Manhattan. The New York public library's main branch at 41st and 5th was the site where the rioters burned down a black orphanage and then stood outside gunning down anyone that tried to escape. Troops had to be sent from once Gettysburg had concluded to quell the riots.
With all that being said, New York was the engine that enabled the North to win the war.

My 3rd G-Grandfather 92 N.Y. Infantry. Both assaults in the battle at Cold Harbor, severely wounded and died 7 years later.

Not to mention, the Erie Canal made it possible for the Union to get shipments to and from the interior and Great Lakes without needing to access the Mississippi River. The salt mining in that area also ensured Union rations would be numerous and plentiful.

I always wondered if that was part of the reason why the New York Yankees baseball team got there name. Before then they were called the NY Americans then some newspaper reporter called then "Yanks" because it used less characters but why Yanks? he could have referred the team under any other name.

General Sheridan was from Albany although I don't believe he ever commanded a local New York unit.
