My parents got Smokey for my brother and I when I was about seven years old. They wanted a nice, calm, gentle horse for him and I to learn on, and Smokey was exactly what they wanted.
Smokey was an Appaloosa/Quarter Horse gelding with a big heart and cheeky personality. He was always gentle with us, but even still he had a couple of things that he didn't like. One of them was his girth on his saddle getting done up. He absolutely hated that, and he would try everything possible to make sure that it wasn't done up too tight. From everything he taught me, the thing I remember the most is to ALWAYS CHECK THE GIRTH before you mount, because if you don't, you will find yourself on the ground as I learnt the hard way quite a few times.
He put up with my rather awkward attempts at riding (I did get better as the time went on) and he never put a hoof wrong. He mightn't have been a show pony, or a star dressage horse, we never even got to do pony club because he was too old, but that didn't matter to me. All I was concerned about was that I had a horse, and to me he was the best horse in the world.
As the years passed, he became older and older, and he started to have major health problems. Finally, in 2015, we had to make the sad decision that he had to be put down. He was in pain, and the vet couldn't help him any longer. We had had him for nearly eight years, and they were the best years of his life (even with a girl who would plat his mane and tail and fawn over him)
RIP, old buddy, you were the best (and only) horse that I've ever had. You are dearly missed, old fellow. (Videos and photos by my brother and I, sorry for the poor quality of some, they are quite old)
