The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee researchers have unveiled the fossils of one of the largest snakes known to have existed, estimated to have lived 47 million years ago. This discovery, led by Professor Sunil Bajpai and Post-Doctoral Fellow Debjit Dutta, contributes to the institute's collection of significant fossil findings. The newly identified snake, Vasuki indicus, resided in what is now Gujarat during the middle Eocene era. Belonging to the extinct Madatsoidae snake family, Vasuki indicus represents a distinct lineage unique to India. Its name pays homage to its Indian origins and cultural symbolism, drawing from the depiction of Vasuki. The astonishing discovery of Vasuki indicus, estimated to have been as long as a school bus at around 15 meters, was made in the Panandro lignite mine in Kutch, Gujarat.

They discovered it in 2005 and did the study in 2023 because they were busy somewhere else for 17 years. Wow nice! I think they have probably set new record for procrastination !

Appreciated the hard work by IIT, no doubt on that..
But...No AC, No gloves, No proper lab behind, no preservation, just got it in a plastic tray. We need to improve on our standards.

Yaar ISRO ki tarah paleontology jaisi feilds ko bhi support aur funding milna chahiye warna aise hi 19-20 saal tak baithna padega aek research karne ke liye.

As always people fighting in the comments…tsk tsk.. but how unfortunate that this was discovered in 2005 and only now being researched? This is why Indian research facilities are so behind. Instead of giving our hard earned tax payers money and help to countries like Bangladesh, Maldives etc government should invest in research. And the way it is being handled so casually, it could get stolen or damaged. We need to preserve the fossils of Vasuki Indicus. I agree with people, it should be displayed in the museum.

They found this sample in 2005 and only 6 months back they started the study and completed now. Looks like there there is no funding for this type of work.. Omg! 😱.

the study that took 4-5 months, waited 19 years... Clearly we need more paleontologist... but then very few people forrey into it. But what baffels me is the sheer mammoth size of "Vasuki Indicus" which easily outmatches "Titabo Boa" Just WOW!!!

This should be kept in a more secure and stable enclosure, aise he table pe nahi rakh sakte hai..they should also handle it with gloves, 4-5 months bad rakh denge aise he kahi pe bhi itne brilliant discovery ko.
