IIT Roorkee discovers fossils of prehistoric snake in Gujarat
Показать описание
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee researchers have unveiled the fossils of one of the largest snakes known to have existed, estimated to have lived 47 million years ago. This discovery, led by Professor Sunil Bajpai and Post-Doctoral Fellow Debjit Dutta, contributes to the institute's collection of significant fossil findings. The newly identified snake, Vasuki indicus, resided in what is now Gujarat during the middle Eocene era. Belonging to the extinct Madatsoidae snake family, Vasuki indicus represents a distinct lineage unique to India. Its name pays homage to its Indian origins and cultural symbolism, drawing from the depiction of Vasuki. The astonishing discovery of Vasuki indicus, estimated to have been as long as a school bus at around 15 meters, was made in the Panandro lignite mine in Kutch, Gujarat.
