The government of India granted emergency use authorisation for three different types of COVID-19 vaccines: Covaxin, Covishield, and Sputnik V. But there are some doubts about which COVID-19 vaccine to take, how each vaccine works, time period between the COVID-19 vaccine doses, the COVID-19 vaccine efficacy, and if there are any COVID-19 vaccine side effects.
TYPES OF COVID-19 VACCINES AVAILABLE
The three types of COVID-19 vaccines that have emergency use authorisation and are available in India are:
-- Covaxin: If we are looking at how Covaxin works, this is what we need to know. Manufactured by Bharat Biotech, this vaccine works on the inactivated virus. This means that the virus is first inactivated, and then, this inactivated virus is injected into the human body. This is done so that the body develops an immune response against the virus.
-- Covishield: Unlike how Covaxin works, the Covishield vaccine works as a viral vector. In other words, this is an adenovirus vaccine. An adenovirus or a common cold virus is used as a viral vector in this vaccine.
-- Sputnik V vaccine: The third type of COVID-19 vaccine is Sputnik V from Russia. The Sputnik V vaccine is fairly new in India and is another adenovirus vaccine.
DOSES OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COVID-19 VACCINES
All the three types of COVID-19 vaccines need to be given in two doses, but the time between the two doses of COVID-19 vaccines may vary.
-- Covaxin: This needs to be given 4 weeks apart.
-- Covishield: The second dose is administered after a gap of 8-12 weeks.
-- Sputnik V: Each dose of the Sputnik V vaccine in India is different from the other and carries different adenovirus and is given 3-13 weeks apart.
DOSAGE AND COVID-19 VACCINE EFFICACY IN INDIA
The different types of COVID-19 vaccines have proven to have different efficacies. Dr Bhardwaj takes us through them:
-- Covaxin: 78%
-- Covisheild: 70%
-- Sputnik V: 91%
SIDE EFFECTS OF THE THREE TYPES OF COVID-19 VACCINES
There might be some COVID-19 vaccine side effects mostly like other anti-flu vaccines. Dr Bhardwaj lists some of them for us:
-- mild fever
-- Muscle pain
-- Cramps and body ache
-- Pain where the vaccine has been given
While none of the vaccines have long lasting side effects that are serious, different types of COVID-19 vaccines are known to have different side effects. For example the Sputnik vaccine claims to have the least COVID-19 vaccine side effects among the three.
Dr Bhardwaj advises that we should take any COVID-19 vaccine available in India to combat the second wave of COVID-19.
