That's how my tongue looks like, but with a deep line in the middle. I always felt so embarrassed and self conscious about it, I thought it was just me. Thank you for explaining this. People are being unnecessary rude and nasty in the comments.

It CAN be normal. The scallops around the edges as well as the fluffiness of the tongue can also be signs of thyroid issues. If your tongue hasn't always been this way, and it suddenly is, please talk to a doctor. For me it was cancer.

brushing my tongue twice a day made my geographic tongue go away after 2-3months but if I stop brushing for a week or 2 it comes back. advice no one asked for but there it is

I was diagnosed with geographical tongue in high school. I am anemic and back then I often ate ice (pica - for those who don't know the term). Sometimes my tongue felt burned from the fissures and areas that looked like I had scraped off the taste buds (papillae) or scalded my tongue! Rolling ice over my tongue was the only thing that helped. As soon as I supplemented with a strong B complex vitamin my fissures healed and my taste buds healed. Anyone who comes to me with similar complaints or tongue appearance I run labs and have them do the same. I'm a PA. ;)

She has what is called scalloping all around the edges of the tongue. This is an oral motor dysfunction that indicates that the tongue is pushing on the teeth all the time. Reason? Her palate is too small for the tongue to rest and function on it perhaps due to orthodontic collapse of the maxilla. The results of insufficient tongue space are the scalloping we see and the rest of the tongue falling back into the airway, that we don't see. Often when people are suffering from poor sleep, it's the TONGUE that is the problem!!

It also looks like she has a fungal/yeast situation going on!!! 😳 Nystatin Liquid would help to take the white coating away.

My daughter had a geographic tongue when she was little. Our pediatrician said she lacked B vitamins. After starting her on B vitamins, and then eventually a multivitamin for children, her tongue completely normalized. Did the B clear it up, or was it coincidence?

My tongue is kind of similar to this. My teeth indented the outside of my tongue permanently. I’ve always been self conscious about it.
But I love how the doc says it’s normal but there’s people in the comment section saying to take this or do that.

I think she may have thrush (candida a.) as well, and that may or may not be "normal" for her, but it's not with me. I would swab this to confirm thrush. It could be a different pathogen but I would doubt that. To be sure, I'd send a swab to the lab.

I have a geographic tongue. Had it from the time I was little and finally had a doctor tell me what it was and that I'm not dying a few months ago after a beck surgery.

by normal he means she isnt going to die from it, so it gets accepted as normality but for some it may be due to some deficiency or intolerance.. if u have it u get used to it and u dont know what u are missing, like tongue sensation can be improved by not having this, breath issues etc...

Glad to see someone else has this! I kept getting told you can only have one or the other but my tongue definitely looks like both
