Very enjoyable as always. As this isn't a 'blockbuster' it's flown under the radar a bit for me so this was very interesting.

Ian McKellen is one of my favorites. Fell in love with him in LOTR (no surprise) but to see him play a baddy is definitely a refreshing take, though not his first. Sad that it kind of fell flat.

1:55 I'm old enough to remember Marber being part of the cast+ writing team for 'The Day Today' and the Alan Partridge series 'Knowing me, Knowing You' before his career took a very different turn.
2:24 I can see why they took the opportunity to do some re-tinkering after feedback and plenty of good films had re-shoots [e, g, Bourne Identity] but I do wonder if sometimes it's a bit 'throwing good money after bad' [e.g. recent flop Boarderlands].
6:32 When the film was first announced in 2020 Colin Firth was part of the cast [presumably the lead] before dropping out so his casting would be more in line with Dench's 'against type' casting in 'Notes'.

Romola Garai AND Gemma Arterton? A younger me would have seen this movie just to see them. Add McKellan, Manville and Strong, and this whole movie sounds like it would be a fun, nostalgic comfort watch. Come for the familiar stars, stay for the plot.

You used to do bad movie beat down on films but I have to tell you some of them are actually not bad films ( cobra, 2012, pirates 3 were decent )
