Social Skills for Kids: How to help your child socialize!

This month for Dr. Marcie's Ask Me Anything, a member of the Behavior + Beyond community asked, "What do I do that my kids wants to spend time with adults more than other kids?"

I was that kind of girl, who preferred adults or older kids, because they are smarter and more interesting to be with. You learn so much and they act kinder, too. My age kids didn't have much to offer honestly, so I was always bored with them and felt superior to them.

I was going to say most times I don't let my kids just win. LOL It's made them handle losing better. They don't throw fits like some kids do which is nice. They have also learned how to be better sharers. They still don't have many friends, the friends they have prefer others too so they don't hang much. We are working on fostering new relationships

Im somewhat raising my gfs nephew cus his dad is avoidany and i want his life to grow better than mine, and this has been really helpful. Hes scared of other kids because older adults are predicitable. Hes gotten really smart and able to tell lies to other people at different times. I get worried that hell replicate this behavior in an older age

Great video! I was wondering what to do in a situation where my child doesn’t want to participate in the same activities as the rest of her classmates and likes to play by herself. She has a vocabulary and will burst out a big long conversation at random to the teachers. but mostly goes off and wonders. Or talk to herself while playing and not to other kids near her. She is in 3 year old preschool. She just turned 4 years old and she doesn’t play a whole lot with other kids besides school bec I’m the one with kids and not my friends.

My brother is 15 y.o, and he could socialize when he was younger but now, he refuses to go out with friends, now since the pandemic he doesn't even have a single friend I think. He is difficult to start a conversation, even sometimes I see he don't answer people's small question for him, he can't blend when his friends are sitting and talkinh together he just standing and watching them in distance alone. he stays silent around people but sooo bright and loud when he is just with us, his family. Sometimes I feel like my brother has 2 completely different personality inside and outside the house. I am concerned how he will survive in the society if he really have bad social skills.

Thank you very much marcie. My son is 10 years old he is happy with child who gets along good with him in school and play day . How ever he is very possessive about his friends and becoming very aggressive if his friends find other or don’t play the way my son wants . Everyday fights and arguments in school. How to deal with it ?

Hello mam my child is 4.5 yrs old .we live in Paris and here there is no more kid around him though he is going for day care from age 1 but still not interested to play with other child he always preferred to play alone .even he didn’t speak any word till age 3 not a single word .we are doing his speech therapy but he don’t want to mingle with other child till now even in school also so what should I do with him I don’t understand and I m in stress always for him

Loved I was facing the exact same situation, spcially after covid lockdowns, when he should have been playing with friend (age 2 and 3) but was rather locked in a house with mum n dad.. ...somehow we could bring him to parity still, , he is super protective of his things/toys etc, so when his friends come out to play, first thing he does is to hide is favorite toys, although with our persuasion, he started letting the kids play with other toys (not so important toys) .. Although we laugh about it, but should we go along with it, or there is another trick to make him generous like his dad for friends (opposite to his mumma ;) )

Thanks Dr Marcie it's very informative. My daughter is 2 years old but its seems she get scared with people and doesn't even say hi to them when people greeted her. How to encourage her to be socialize with other people? Thanks in advance
