SHORT STOP IN VIRGINIA CITY: FOURTH WARD SCHOOL AND ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH

The historic Fourth Ward School Museum & Archives is a treasure. As the last school standing of its kind today, the archives at the Museum connect the past and are designed to preserve and remember family heritage. Designed in 1876 it originally held over 1,000 students in grades 1 through 9. Grades 10 through 12 were added in 1909. It's last graduating class was in 1936. It remained closed until it was opened in 1986 as a museum

Virginia City's Catholic Church was built in 1868, destroyed by fire in 1875, and rebuilt in 1876. There is scarcely a picture taken of Virginia City that does not reveal St Mary's steeple in the background.
