The teacher was awful, but I love the fact he wasn't actually malicious. He was incredibly misguided, couldn't read the room, sucked at understanding his students and absolutely incompetent.
But he wasn't evil. He was trying to help Junpei as he believed some of his friends had just died, and wanted to help him move past it. Was that stupid of him? Yes! But compared to most other teachers in animation he wasn't actually a powerhungry evil person. He was just painfully ignorant at what was going on around him.
Like, he genuinely thought Junpei and those bullies were friends as we see at the end of the arc where he gets shocked at the scars on Junpei's face.
Was it willful ignorance? I am not completely certain, but I don't actually believe so.
He goes out of his way to punish the kid that started it all by pushing Junpei to his breaking point and even agrees to being responsible as well.
He takes responsibility from his lack of awareness of what was going on and not only makes sure to get the main bully (that is still alive) gets the proper punishment but also that he will need to face consequences for the fact he didn't react in time (This kind of makes me believe he might have just tried to convince himself it wasn't happening)
It is refreshing to see a teacher that actually went after the bullies instead of the bullied after they retaliate even if it was done WAY too late. Like he is at least trying to right his wrongs even if it is way too late!
It gives this tiny character way more depth than he otherwise would have and I am ALL for it!
