This reminds me of a Japanese Movie 'Summer Wars' where a malicious AI Virus took over a IT site used by every one leading to world wide chaos. The old saw 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket' really applies.

Any updates to a commercial system should be tested by the end user organisation prior to release to their network, whether the update is released by itMicrosoft, Crowdstrike or anyone else. Failure to mitigate such a Risk is a failure by the end user organisation.

Crowdstrike, I heard, sponsors a lot of Endurance races, like the recents 6 hours of GT racing at Spa, Belgium.
They are an American cybersecurity technology company, for those who don't know.

According to NYT, there would be MINIMAL compensations:
The outages underscored an uncomfortable reality that software companies face few liabilities for major disruptions and cybersecurity incidents. The economic and legal penalties for such significant outages can be so minimal that companies are not motivated to make more fundamental changes. While a car manufacturer would face stiff penalties for faulty breaks, a software provider can often issue another update and move on.

“Until software companies have to pay a price for faulty products, we will be no safer tomorrow than we are today, ” Mr. Parenty said.

Systems running Linux or macOS do not use Channel File 291 and were not impacted.

In 2010 McAfee is aware that a number of customers have incurred a false
positive error due to incorrect malware alerts on Wednesday, April 21.
The problem occurs with the 5958 virus definition file (DAT) that was
released on April 21 at 2.00 PM GMT+1 (6am Pacific Time).

And then CrowdStrike was founded in 2012 by CEO George Kurtz, formerly of McAfee.

What a bunch of amateurs... No system backups?
By the way...Microsoft has nothing to do with it. CrowdStrike software caused this.
