I’m in a wheelchair and I do the same thing when someone asks me what happened.
I’ll say something like “have you ever been shark diving?” Then when they admit they haven’t, I’ll go into a long story about sharks and their teeth and how you can get the bends if you ascend to the surface too quickly. After a few minutes they ask me if it was a shark or the bends that paralyzed me. That’s when I say “neither, I was born this way.”
