The tv one was once true long ago when TVs first came out. TVs were tubed in shape and didn't have many pixels so the best way to see the tv was further back. If you sat too close the image would be blurry and that strained people's eyes plus the tube shape also would negatively affect one's eye if they were too close. Not to mention they were very very heavy and parents worried that if it fell down it would hurt or kill their child.
