Ahhh...
Ahhh...

Doo, doo, dooohoo, doo, doo
doo, doo, doo, doo, do-do, doohoo

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision

Blue, blue, electric blue
That's the colour of my room
Where I will live
Blue, blue

Pale blinds drawn all day
Nothing to do, nothing to say
Blue, blue

I will sit right down, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
And I will sing, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
Drifting into my solitude, over my head

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision

Sound and Vision was released on David Bowie's 1977 album, Low. This is one of Bowie's greatest works, recorded when he was kicking his coke habit and had moved from New York to Berlin. Longtime producer, the brilliant Tony Visconti was on board, as well as the even more brilliant Brian Eno.

The album consists of one side (Side One) of shorter, highly melodic power/glam songs and a second side (Side Two) which was comprised of longer, mostly instrumental sonic tone poems.

I was very anxious to hear Bowie's new album when it was released in 1977, as I'd become a huge fan of his work and had just the winter before, purchased my first Bowie album on release date (Station to Station in January 1976). Station To Station was such an incredible album and there was much anticipation and discussion about Bowie's new album that the was recording in Berlin with Eno!

At first listen, Low seemed to be a major letdown....a string of short tunes and the instrumental side (not too exciting for a Bowie fan), but after a repeated listens I began to realize what amazing music this album contained.....side one, at least. There is so much going on with those songs......even today I can honestly say that, no matter how many times I hear these songs, they seem to shift and sound so differently with each listen....like some glimmering dream that you can't quite place. I've never quite understood the power of Low's side one, and I guess that's part of the mystique and what continues to make this music so special.

I wanted to make a video for each song from side one, and choosing which one to do first was difficult, but of course, "Sound and Vision" has to come first...3:00 minutes of pure undistilled musical genius. Of course, the proper way to listen to the tune is right after "What In The World" and immediately before "Always Crashing In The Same Car".....the power of the music is magnified when you listen to those 7 incredible songs as the glorious Side One of Low!!!

Hope to work up the other 6 soon! Hope you enjoy this one!

I had this album soon after its release and was blown away by it for the entire decade to follow. I promised myself once I owned my own house I would paint a room electric blue in homage. I did just that and can honestly state it was my biggest interior design disaster ever. I ran to the paint shop before it was dry and replaced it with Van Gogh yellow. Happy memories and brilliant song.

Way ahead of its time. Dude, try to imagine yourself on that year hearing this track or a new career in a new town. usually I play those songs and made people guess from what year it comes from and they're always wrong.

I remember the day LOW was released. I was walking down the Main Road in Croydon and it was blaring on someones radio. I ran to the nearest music shop (in Whitgift Shopping Centre) to buy it.
