Excerpt from "Die Unauffälligen der Rocky Mountains" (Tiere vor der Kamera | Episode 06/54)

New World porcupines take their names from their spiny coverings and inhabit forests and wooded regions across North America, and into South America. They're stout animals, with blunt, rounded heads, fleshy, mobile snouts, and coats of thick, cylindrical or flattened spines which are mixed with long, soft hairs. Their powerful tail helps them to balance when they are in the tree tops. They eat bark, leaves, conifer needles, but also roots, stems, berries, seeds, nuts, grasses, and flowers. Some might even eat insects and small reptiles.
