0:00 - Welcome.
2:50 - Introduction to Jim! 👋
8:36 - Jim kicks off the introduction to IoT with our agenda.
9:29 - We start with 'What is IoT'? 💡
13:18 - IoT is all about data! Here we learn just how much and what we can do with it. 📈
15:07 - Time to talk about devices - Microcontrollers and single board computers.
29:15 - Jim sets up his Wio Terminal using PlatformIO with Visual Studio Code. 👩💻
40:01 - Deploy time! Jim deploys code to his Wio Terminal.
46:04 - Let's talk about the applications of IoT. 🏠 🏣 🏭 🚜 🏙
54:36 - Jim gives some examples of IoT devices you probably have around you.
56:10 - Homework time! 👩🎓
56:52 - Wrap up time. Jim takes some questions from the live audience. 🎤
This session is part of a month-long series.
The term 'Internet of Things' was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 to refer to connecting the Internet to the physical world via sensors. Since then, the term has been used to describe any device that interacts with the physical world around it either by gathering data from sensors, or providing real-world interactions via actuators (devices that do something like turn on a switch or light an LED), generally connected to other devices or the Internet.
This lesson covers some of the introductory topics around the Internet of Things, and shows a basic ‘Hello World’ project with a microcontroller.
Speaker:
Jim Bennett, Senior Cloud Advocate, Microsoft
Jim does things with IoT and Azure in the Developer Relations team at Microsoft, mainly creating content for students and faculty to help them be successful with Microsoft technologies. He’s British, so sounds way smarter than he actually is, and is happy he moved to Redmond in time to be locked down at home and not see the office he came to work in, or the places he wanted to visit. In the past he’s lived in 4 continents working as a developer in the mobile, desktop, and scientific space. He also hates cats, but has an 8 year old daughter who loves cats, so he has 2 cats.
