Thank you, Henry, for that fascinating 'geeky' analysis of Hebrew, leading to Rouen. You never fail to inform. I took two years of graduate Hebrew from Regent College, including a term studying the book of Job in Hebrew. As a Anglican pastor, I highly recommend others learning Hebrew, and always preach when in the Tenach from both the Hebrew and English.

A truly sad section of a story Professor.

Glad that it was you who revived it.

With your multi angled approach ( the geeky and aesthetically humours bit included :-D ) .

Thank you so much for this extraordinary piece of history! It is fascinating to be able to bring one authentic unknown life into focus. This story really resonated with me as I was born in Rouen and grew up close by. It added a new facet to the Norman history I am familiar with. I look forward to watching other such videos!

Thanks again Prof! I was just in France in Orleans on the Loire and stayed a few kilometres west in a town called Saint Denis De L'Hotel across the river from Jargeau - both renowned villages defended by Jeanne D'Arc. In St Denis De L'Hotel there is a street called 'Rue Faux Juif'- and I asked my friend there that I was visiting, a native of the area, what the origins was and he did not know but it had bothered him too. I then learned that there are many references to Juif - in reference to houses, streets and oddest of all 'dead end streets'. Nowhere could I find any sense to Faux Juif and wondered if you could shed any light on this.

Dr Abramson, sir, the YouTube pieces in cyberspace become more and more fascinating and scholarly...Have you considered doing one on the gastronomy of the Hebrews/Israelites/Jews from Biblical times to the present? Just to wet your interest, there is, I believe, a Talmudic reference to there being "No joy without wine." The Ramban must have had this in mind when he wrote about the positive medicinal properties of wine but warned against consuming too much of the stuff. And there's more, much more...

Interesting and tragic story. Rodez is in France, a small but important archbishop town about 800 m above sea with poor earth. So this town couldnt be meant from geography. Good fortune for you!

I did not find it geeky at all but fascinating. Among other things it shows the importance of Jewish material in more general history. It would be interesting to know if cognates of *”Radom” ~ *”Rodom” (רדום) are attested in Medieval Norman (French) language sources.

William the Conq brought an entire Jewish community with him in England. when you look at history in detail only a few things were black and white. the rest is colourful

Great video as always and I hope you're having a great Pesach. Some time ago you shared a video on the Griffin Haggadah and in this one you talked about everything they kept in Cairo which also includes the oldest known Haggadah. I ended up including references to both in my recent video on the history and musicianship of the song "Dayenu" so thanks for giving me that knowledge and helping my own research along. Please keep them coming!

Levett is my family, doomsday citation. John levett of Hingham Mass 1681 is my line. How come we aren't Jewish? Also direct descendant of Susan White/Mayflower = Peregrine White. I wish I knew my heritage.
