They do need to be kept. Once one unfortunately dies. The other one will never take another partner. They are mates for life.

what gorgeous creatures. they look like a little plane! they can actually SLEEP when flying and they rarely land although they are good swimmers. and in fact even dive for prey. they also mate for life even though they may be 1000's of miles from their spouse when away from the breeding season which lasts for over a year as the chicks are very slow growing and they have much to learn.

The reason they can do this is they can lock the bones in their wings, making a rigid wing like a plane.

As a seafarer sailing worldwide I never seen an albatross with a wings span of 3.6mtrs length. and also albatross never fly without taking rest. because we always have them at night and day resting and sleeping in our forward part once they get tired. They only fly back once they get hungry. Sometimes we hate them for bombing our forward part with thier shits. but as a seafarer we never touch them for we have a belief that if we touch them bad weather will come to us. And yeah it sometimes happened that's why i always let them rest in our forward part all the time. And they look very interesting once they fly beside our ship hunting fish.

I had a great experience with an albatross. I was a navy corpsman and was stationed on the USS KILAUEA. An albatross flew into our forward antenna and crashed on the deck. I took care of people but superstition prevailed and I was called to attend the bird. After figuring out what to do, I taped his beak closed because he was beating the crap out of me.After wrapping it in a towel and keeping him warm for an hour or so I put it on the side of the forecastle he jumped of and fell but as he was about to hit the water he opened his huge wings and away he went. What a trip.

Thermal updrafts have nothing to do with it.

Prevailing winds have everything to do with it.
